Sexual Energy, Vitality, & Traditional Asian Medicine

Taoism, which is the foundation of Chinese Medicine, places tremendous value on the cultivation of sexual energy and love. Love, passion, and sexual desire are not only a reflection of our vitality, but also provide a powerful source of healing and growth. Traditional Asian Medicine (TAM) offers us a wealth of wisdom into how we can boost our sexual vitality, vigor, and overall wellness by using practices, nutrition, herbal medicine, and acupuncture to improve our health and strengthen our sexual energy.

When we think about sexual health through the lens of TAM, we must first consider the Kidney system. A strong libido and abundant Kidney Qi are associated with health and longevity. This is because the Kidney is not just an organ of filtration and waste removal, but it is considered the origin of life, storing our inherited Qi and Essence. It is also the foundation of Yin and Yang, which continually influence and inform each other. It is their balance that is essential for sexual and reproductive health, longevity, and fertility.

It is also the foundation of Yin and Yang, which continually influence and inform each other. It is their balance that is essential for sexual and reproductive health, longevity, and fertility.

Some herbal aphrodisiacs can be used for immediate energy, boosting the Kidney Yang, while others act more slowly, deeply nourishing the Yin and blood. But the greatest benefit will be realized by taking a balanced approach, strengthening Kidney Yin, Yang, and Essence over time.

The most effective way to utilize these benefits is to work with a TAM practitioner who will create an herbal aphrodisiac formula customized for your individual needs.

Here are some of my favorite herbal ingredients:

Shu Di Huang (Rhemannia) – Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidneys and tonifies the blood and Essence; nourishes Yin and generates fluids; and is used for almost any condition of aging, as well as impotence, insomnia, irregular menstruation, dizziness, and weakness.

Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) – Enters the Heart, Liver, and Spleen and tonifies the blood; regulates menstruation, invigorates the blood, and disperses cold; and is used for infertility, menstrual irregularities, pallor, amenorrhea, and dysmenorrhea.

He Shou Wu (Polygonium) – Enters the Liver and Kidneys and tonifies the Liver and Kidneys; nourishes the blood and augments the Essence; and is used for infertility, premature greying of the hair, weakness of the low back and knees, nocturnal emissions, and insomnia.

Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium) - Enters the Liver and Kidneys and tonifies the Kidneys and fortifies the Yang; warms and unblocks the flow of Yang Qi; and is used for impotence, frequent urination, joint pain, and cold low back and knees.
